Prof. Niels Peek – The GM Care Record: Using deidentified patient information to support research into COVID-19

Joining up patient information through the GM Care Record has been crucial in supporting the care and treatment of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, deidentified patient information from the GM Care Record has also been used for research to help understand how the pandemic has affected communities across Greater Manchester. The research is helping to inform the response to the pandemic including:

  • the trends and risks to public health due to the virus
  • understanding the impact on those communities at highest risk
  • how the pandemic has affected those with other health conditions and risk factors

In this film, Niels Peek, Professor of Health Informatics at The University of Manchester, describes the importance of using deidentified patient information from the GM Care Record for research.

In the film, Niels explains: “What’s unique about the GM Care Record is that it involves all citizens across the locality… This enables us to do place-based research and innovation, and use results from the research to directly to improve health and health services in Greater Manchester”.
