Manchester is one of six academic health science centres (AHSCs) in England designated to research new treatments, improve health education and transform patient care. Our goal is to make new scientific discoveries and shorten the time to turn them into effective treatments to deliver benefits for patients locally and around the world. As part of Health Innovation Manchester, MAHSC brings together our world leading academic and NHS partners to drive health research.

MAHSC’s six research domains are focused on addressing the greatest population health needs and harnessing our research excellence – cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammation and repair, women and children, mental health and neuroscience. Each of the domains will be holding a showcase event in the first half of 2020.

Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity account for disproportionate mortality and morbidity in Greater Manchester. The Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, together with the GM Academic Health Science Network, working together as Health Innovation Manchester, are carrying out cutting-edge work spanning from basic science to innovative new ways of delivering care – with the goal of changing this for the benefit of our citizens.

This event, running from 9.30 to 3.30 with lunch provided, will be an opportunity for attendees to hear about a wide array of Cardiovascular and Diabetes research initiatives and practice innovations taking place across Greater Manchester including:

• The Manchester Amputation Reduction Strategy – reducing major limb amputation in GM by managing and healing foot and leg ulcers faster
• The GM Rapid Access Acute Coronary Syndrome programme – speeding up the treatment of threatened heart attacks.
• Improving the outcomes for diabetes patients through cutting-edge new technology
• Translational research opportunities at the new Manchester Centre for Heart and Lung Magnetic Resonance Research
• Improving outcomes across GM and beyond for patients with stroke
• Influence of the body clock on risk factors for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
• Improving outcomes for pregnant women and their babies
• New models of cardiovascular disease giving insight into potential new treatments.

This is also an opportunity for attendees to share their views in discussion sessions on what research and implementation directions would most benefit the population of GM.
