Cardiovascular Renal Metabolic (CVRM) MISSION
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally, imposing a substantial burden on individuals, society, and healthcare systems. In the UK alone, over 7 million people live with CVD, making it a significant driver of disability, mortality, and socioeconomic burden.
CVD intensifies the pressure on the health and social care system, increases the reliance on informal caregivers, and impacts the economy through higher levels of sickness absence and reduced workforce participation. Recognising its impact, the NHS Long Term Plan designated CVD as a clinical priority, emphasising it as the largest area where lives can be saved in the next decade.
In Greater Manchester (GM), the challenge is even more pronounced. GM has the highest CVD mortality rate in England, with approximately 5,500 CVD-related deaths annually, double the national average. The economic and societal costs are staggering, and it is estimated that CVD costs GM £2.3 billion each year.
To address this, Health Innovation Manchester (HInM) has launched the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic (CVRM) Mission. Working in partnership with the wider GM healthcare system we will align plans, priorities and resources to deliver innovation that improves health outcomes, sustainability and economic growth.
Our mission priorities are:
- Address inequalities in underserved communities by finding people at risk of CVRM diseases and providing equitable access to care and treatment.
- Harness advances in population health management to more accurately target interventions and shift towards prevention, as well as quantify the cost and benefits of different approaches.
- Develop a new pan-GM obesity model of care, underpinned by innovation, to support increased equity of access to obesity care and treatment
- Form strategic partnerships with industry to accelerate deployment of proven therapies and treatment, underpinned by a system blueprint approach
The CVRM Mission will bring together the collective power of the local health and social care system to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care of CVRM to give people in GM the best possible health outcomes and quality of life.
Risk managing cardiovascular disease to address inequalities
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains one of the leading causes of death globally, disproportionately affecting marginalised and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Addressing inequalities in CVD outcomes requires a comprehensive risk management approach that considers both medical and social determinants of health.
A risk management approach to cardiovascular disease (CVD) involves identifying, assessing, and reducing risk factors to prevent disease onset, progression, and complications. Addressing risk factors can reduce the deterioration of the cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic systems and prevent disease occurring.

Harnessing innovation to maximise opportunities to generate population health data insights to drive CVRM improvement initiatives
The local healthcare system is already aware of a proportion of people who have cardiovascular disease, but there are still many people that have not yet been diagnosed or are not being managed as well as they could be. Work is being undertaken to help identify these individuals to provide them with the right support and treatment to give them the best outcome and quality of life.
Population health data will then be used to inform how we reduce risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, by providing a clear indication of where and when interventions and treatments need to be introduced. This will also take into consideration where the greatest benefits can be delivered for individuals at risk and for the Greater Manchester health care system.

This programme unites efforts to enhance cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic (CVRM) health in Greater Manchester by both analysing the burden and care gaps of CVRM conditions and systematically improving the introduction of innovative care models and novel therapies.
Under this programme, HInM is developing strategic partnerships with industry to support the introduction, optimisation, and accelerated deployment of innovations to tackle CVRM diseases, all underpinned by a system blueprint approach.
The programme aims to ensure that new treatments and models of care are introduced efficiently and consistently, ultimately improving patient outcomes and supporting system-wide transformation.
Our experiences in this area will be used to inform the development of a blueprint for further successful deployment of innovative care models and novel therapies.
