Common Data Platform
Part of the Health Innovation Accelerator
The Common Data Platform is a collection of digital assets and data generated from the Health Innovation Accelerator programme to accelerate and compliment data and processes from the GM Secure Data Environment (SDE).
It forms one of two cross-cutting themes that span across the Health Innovation Accelerator programme, with the aim of the Common Data Platform being to use data from across the programme to better understand and improve health outcomes in at-risk populations in Greater Manchester, alongside testing the onboarding of new digital assets and tools.
Secure Data Environments (SDEs) are highly secure computing environments that provide remote access to health data for approved researchers to use in health and care research. Secure Data Environments can help researchers understand and predict population health needs – a crucial objective for the Health Innovation Accelerator programme to improve health outcomes and save lives.
The Common Data Platform builds on the SDE by working closely with partners to develop new ways of working with data from the SDE. This may help inform which populations and groups in GM may at highest risk of developing diseases, and who could benefit most from earlier awareness and diagnosis.
Additionally, the Common Data Platform will work to ensure users of the SDE can access data and apply tools to support projects within the Health Innovation Accelerator. This will include creating new data assets, supporting existing infrastructure, and working with industry and research partners to consult and share expert knowledge.
Work programme packages:
There are five key parts to the Common Data Platform, all of which are delivered by a range of partners. These five work packages include (please click each tab below to read more):
To support project teams across the Health Innovation Accelerator to gain access to the SDE and share learnings across the programme.
Working with Jiva.ai to test how an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool can be safely integrated into the SDE, to improve access for more researchers.
Work with industry partners to accelerate and add additional support to existing requirements within the SDE, focusing on security, automation and improvement of privacy enhancing technologies.
Work with industry partners to provide technical input and expertise in the ability to surface data in the SDE.
Working with Graphnet Health Ltd, to integrate data from the GM Care Record into an enhanced patient finding cohort tool, to help inform at-risk populations in GM and guide focus to engage more with those populations.
Key partners working across the Common Data Platform (CDP) are:
– Innovate UK
– NHS Greater Manchester
– The University of Manchester
– Graphnet
– BCN
– Jiva.ai
Alignment with Patient Public Involvement and Engagement
Patient Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE), the second cross-cutting theme for the Health Innovation Accelerator programme, aligns closely with the Common Data Platform. By identifying gaps in our understanding of at-risk populations, through PPIE we can engage with and capture greater insights about those populations, to complement the SDE and Common Data Platform.
By ensuring the data about our GM population is accurate and reliable, we can make better, informed decisions to improve outcomes and save lives in Greater Manchester.
Shared learnings
The Common Data Platform will also capture and showcase shared learnings across the Health Innovation programme, focusing on digital and data assets, to deepen partner connections and strengthen the regional innovation ecosystem.
The Health Innovation Accelerator
The Health Innovation Accelerator encompasses two projects, the Advanced Diagnostics Accelerator and the DEVOTE programme, delivered through a partnership between Health Innovation Manchester, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), The University of Manchester, and industry partners.
This project is part-funded by the Greater Manchester Innovation Accelerator programme. Led by Innovate UK on behalf of UK Research and Innovation, the pilot Innovation Accelerators programme is investing £100m in 26 transformative R&D projects to accelerate the growth of three high-potential innovation clusters – Glasgow City Region, Greater Manchester and West Midlands. Supporting the Government’s levelling-up agenda, this is a new model of R&D decision making that empowers local leaders to harness innovation in support of regional economic growth and help attract private R&D investment and develop future technologies.
