Identifying the cost of cardiovascular disease in Greater Manchester
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) places a profound burden on individuals and broader society. With over 7 million people living with cardiovascular disease in the UK, it is a significant driver of disability and death.
Health Innovation Manchester commissioned Frontier Economics to explore the costs of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Greater Manchester.
Published in February 2025, the report has revealed the economic and societal cost of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Greater Manchester (GM) to be an estimated £2.5 billion a year, with costs significantly increasing for individuals suffering from multiple cardiovascular conditions.
The report provides a comprehensive analysis of the financial and human toll of CVD, considering not only the burden on the NHS and social care but also the broader societal impact. This includes reduced quality of life, the strain on informal caregivers, and economic losses from higher sickness rates and decreased employment.
By quantifying the size of the problem of CVD in GM, it is clear further action is needed.
The report will inform the strategic direction of the Mission by helping to identify how innovation opportunities to improve cardio-vascular can be maximised and unwarranted fiscal burden reduced.
