Greater Manchester

GM Academic Centre for Acute Care and Trauma

This project has now completed.

Greater Manchester Academic Centre for Acute Care and Trauma (GM-aCAT) is an alliance formed by clinical academics, healthcare professionals and NHS service providers in Greater Manchester.

The alliance aims to ensure that the NHS in GM delivers world-class acute care and trauma services underpinned by research, education and training.

The alliance is timely, planned alongside GM trauma service reconfiguration and, important, because major trauma caseload in GM is 20-30% higher than any other single UK receiving site, and one of the largest in Europe. The burden of associated mortality and morbidity is significant and its economic impact substantial, set within a challenging landscape of poor population health.

GM-aCAT builds on the track record of national research leaders and academic achievements including international leaders in major trauma epidemiologypostgraduate education/training and emergency triage.

Vision: establish Greater Manchester as the UK’s leading academic centre for acute tissue injury and trauma.

Purpose: create a collaborative academic centre of international significance that will deliver major benefits for patients in Greater Manchester.

GM-aCAT activity

GM-aCAT has been designed to develop and foster strategic partnerships that will bring together established academic strengths, grouped by focus areas, relevant to delivering its goals. The GM-aCAT Leadership Team has established seven focus areas, each managed by a group of clinicians and clinical academics.  These focus areas have been identified as key to meeting the vision of Greater Manchester being the UK’s leading academic centre for acute care and trauma.
