Maximising learning through reflection: Lessons learned from a reflective portfolio (The Academy for Education and Professional Development)

University Place 2.219, 176 Oxford Rd, Manchester M13 9PL

The session will present lessons learned from the use of a reflective portfolio on an MSc course. A reflective portfolio was introduced to develop the skills necessary for progression to applied psychology training. The written portfolio was described by our professional body as “intuitive and engaging” (BPS, Jan 2018).

It aims to support students reflecting on learning from teaching and independent study. Students are encouraged to set goals to maximise their opportunities whilst at University and also to consider how their learning supports their employability. In 2018/19 we have trialled the Pebblepad platform. The session will review our experience of the portfolio and use of this platform. Attendees will be encouraged to collaborate and share their own experience of teaching reflective practice to shape and advance the use of the portfolio on the MSc.

This session will be delivered as a workshop in which we will:

  • Collaboratively appraise approaches used to embed reflective practice theory and practice within an MSc course
  • Collaboratively examine current approaches to reflective practice
  • Consider how an eplatform (Pebblepad) can be used to support reflective practice
  • Reflect on experiences of student participation in reflection beyond summative tasks and consider strategies to overcome barriers to engagement.
